Macaulay James picMACAULAY – James was born on June 13, 1920 at the Macaulay farm west of Leinan, Saskatchewan, the son of Scottish immigrants Peter and Margaret Macaulay.   He had four siblings–Agnes, his twin brother Jack, Freda, and Dewaine.   James was predeceased by his spouse of 72 years, Cora, in April this year.  He is survived by his daughter Catherine, his son Kent (Thom Knutson), his brother Jack, his brother-in-law John Marsch (Margaret), his sister-in-law May Marsch, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  James attended Kilton Hill School (named by his father, who helped build the school, after a location in southern Scotland).    He completed Grade Nine, and then began working on the Brown and Schuler farms in the neighborhood.   He met Cora Marsch who was housekeeping in the area, one thing led to another, and they were married in Bethel Prairie Lutheran Church in 1943, beginning a long and loving life together.   James and Cora built their own farmhouse with the help of some carpenter relatives, and they planted over 3,000 trees as a shelterbelt for their yard.  Over the years, they had many community involvements; James was a church council member, 4-H leader, and Saskatchewan Wheat Pool delegate.  James was an avid sports fan, and participated in softball at school and church picnics, and in curling, horseshoe and bowling.   He enjoyed community dances and was a very smooth dancer.  He learned to play cribbage at age 15, and after eighty years of near-misses, finally scored a perfect 29-hand.   He loved a good joke, even if he had heard it (or told it!) before.  James had a rich and fulfilling 96 years, and will be remembered by family and friends for his thrift, practicality, hard work, and contribution to his community.  A celebration of life service was held on Monday, July 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Linda Hall officiating.

King Vi picIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Viola Mae King. Vi was born on May 2, 1937, the third daughter to Oscar and Mildred Peterson and grew up in Pennant, Sask. In 1955, Vi met and married Garnet King and moved to Stewart Valley, where they raised 4 children. Vi loved being on the farm. Harvest was probably the time she loved best. She was an accomplished seamstress. From blue jeans to fancy dresses to Halloween costumes, she was able to do it all. Always a crafter, Vi excelled at any project she took on. 4 Seasons ceramic plates and wooden butterflies adorned many newlyweds’ homes, thanks to her. Vi was a definite people person. Whether it was cards at Benny’s, a basement full of ladies painting, or the weekly auction, she surrounded herself with people who loved to laugh and tease as much as she did. She had a wide and varied circle of friends. Vi is predeceased by her husband, Garnet King, her son, Russell King, her parents, Oscar and Mildred Peterson, and her sister Agnes Peltier. She leaves to mourn her sister, Hazel (Ron) Philp, children Vickie Mockford (Dwight), Steven King ( Marlene) and Pam Hilton (Kevin), the grand children, who were the light of her life, Brad (Erin) Mockford, Calvin Mockford, Jennifer (Tyler) Wright, Teri (Chad) Thomson, Andrew King, Jeremy King, Taya King and Frankie Hilton and the great grand children who she would have loved to know Lila, Carina and Sorin Mockford,  Scarlett and Indyana Wright and Brayden and Greyson Thomson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. McColl Don PicMcCOLL – Donald (1931-2016) passed away on June 29, 2016 at the Palliser Regional Care Centre.  He was born at Wilson’s farm, near Burnham, SK.  A home to which her would happen to return, fourteen years later, for a period of time after the death of his father, Arthur James McColl.  It would be about one month’s respite for Don’s mother Margaret Jane McColl (known as Jean).  Though times were tough, Donald, overall, spent a happy childhood in Neidpath.  Heavy equipment earthmoving was Don’s official occupation, and unofficial hobby, and, most likely, the subject of his dreams.  Many times Don would go to bed with a mechanical problem in his mind, and find, the next morning, that he had come up with a solution.  Don and Marshall became well-known for the quality of their work and their easy-going nature, throughout the R.M. of Coulee, the neighboring and surrounding R.M’s as well as far afield, to such places as Yellow Grass, Ogema, and Meadow Lake among countless other locations. Over the years, McColl Brothers worked for twenty different Hutterite colonies, numerous rural municipalities, as well as Talisman Energy, Federated Co-op, and especially, Ducks Unlimited, for whom they completed over one-hundred different projects at points all across Saskatchewan.  They also, importantly, repaired and maintained their equipment themselves, at the “shop” in Neidpath, and developed a reputation for keeping their machinery in top working order.  In 1957, Don entered into two partnerships:  he married Jelena, eldest daughter of William and Sarah Holderbein, and, along with his brother Marshall, formed McColl Brothers Construction Limited.  Both were life-long commitments.  Donald and Jelena were married fifty-nine years, first living in a small (but oh so cozy) trailer, located on the Holderbein farm at Neidpath, then moving into the old Holderbein house itself, and finally, to new home, constructed in 1984.  There were good times and bad, for better or worse, through both sadness and joy, but, overall, it was a very happy marriage, which, in 1964, saw the birth of their son, Trenton William McColl.  If the loving, joyful, enchanted years could somehow be turned back, they surely would.  A private family memorial service was held on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Parkside Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Snyder officiating.  For further information or to sign the family book of condolence, visit www.parksidefuneralhome.com.  Arrangements in care of Parkside Memorial Funeral Home – Ryan Cappelle.

Martens Mary edit“Jesus Lead me all the way……….”

Mary Martens peacefully passed away early morning June 30, 2016 surrounded by her loving children. She caught “the morning train to glory” she so frequently had sung about. Mary was born April 18, 1915 the oldest of 13 children; all of which she survived with the exception of the two youngest; sister, Tiena Hildebrand and brother Dave Peters.  She was married to our Dad, George Martens in 1951.  Three children were born: Joyce (married Ron Wieler), Jerry (died 3/99) (married Jan Bartel), and Gordon (married Lois Wieler) followed by 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Mother was blessed with an abundance of energy and joy in living resulting from her personal relationship with Jesus Christ and her ability to focus on the good aspects along with her habit of gratitude even amidst difficult circumstances. Mother enjoyed working hard; an art she learned early as she contributed heavily to the needs of a large family living off the land. Milking cows by hand, planting and nurturing hundreds of trees, making wool quilts and feather pillows and recognizing the importance of teaching her ways to her children and grandchildren along with making the time to encourage a family member or friend in time of need with a bucket of fresh homemade chicken noodle soup were hallmarks of Mom.  We will miss her more than words can express as we treasure the memory of her quick smile and warm loving ways.  Memorial service for Mary Martens was held July 9, 2016 at the Wymark Evangelical Mennonite Church with Phil Houston officiating. Interment was held at Wymark EMC with Harry Peters of Millar College of the Bible. Funeral arrangements were performed by the Parkside Funeral Home.  Donations may be made to Millar College of the Bible, Pambrun, SK

Martens Mary hands editThe Amazing Life of Mary Martens
Mary was born on April 18, 1915; the firstborn of Heinrich and Justina (nee Friesen) Wieler of
Blumenort, Saskatchewan. Her 101 years of life were marked by love, courage, energy, and faith
directed toward others. She had an ongoing realization of God’s faithfulness to her which resulted in a
spirit of gratitude and made her a genuinely happy person. Mantras frequently expressed in word and
action were: The Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,” “Live on the
sunny side of life,” “Wisest is the one who drops the argument first,” “If at first you don’t succeed, try,
try again,” “He who digs a hole for another falls in himself,” “It could be worse,” “where there’s a will
there’s a way.”
As the oldest with 12 siblings, Mary learned from a very young age to love and care for her brothers and
sisters, each of whom held a very special place in Mother’s heart throughout her life. Ten of her loved
ones preceded her to glory. Especially dear to her heart were the “four little ones”; two sets of twins
born when Mother was 17 and 20 years old. Mother loved and cared for these little ones as her own
making sure that each set was clothed in matching outfits down to the smallest details of hair bows and
socks and shoes. The family depended heavily on Mother’s contributions in the daily demands of life. As
a result, time allowed for only a very limited formal education. She would earn the privilege of running
next door to the school house after completing her long list of chores. Her favorite was playing softball
at recess time. Despite spending little time in the classroom, Mom taught herself to read and write in
both German and English. She would write in a completely phonetical way so her writings were uniquely
personalized and treasured, although sometimes required a bit of deciphering.
Mother was completely devoted to her family. When her Father, Heinrich Wieler passed away, leaving
behind a large, young family, Mother considered it an honor to help the family carry on. God in His
mercy soon provided a wonderful man to become the beloved family head in Frank D. Peters. Mother
quickly embraced him as “Dad” and carried a life-long gratitude and indebtedness for God’s gracious
provision of a loving father and a resourceful provider for their family.
In 1951, Mary Wieler married George Martens. She knew him well: a kind-hearted, hardworking man of
integrity, who had proved his character over years of diligent work on her parents’ farm. They were
both 36 years of age when they married, and having always worked for others, they now directed their
focus to establishing a homestead of their own. Together they brought renewed energy and
commitment to the effort of grain and cattle farming, along with gardening to sustain their family. God
provided three children to George and Mary: Joyce, Jerry, and Gordon. Mom and Dad treated us as if we
were the joy of their lives: humbly and gratefully speaking, we think we were…though many nieces and
nephews ran tight competition. Then came the “real joys” of 11 grandchildren and 20 great
grandchildren.
Mother’s strong faith and courage were exhibited in many ways throughout her life, but especially in
how she dealt with personal losses of loved ones. By the time she reached 17 years of age she had lost
her father and several siblings. Deep loss continued throughout her life but seemed to increase her
understanding of God’s sovereignty, the appeal of heaven, the brevity of life, and the importance of
living each day to the fullest. Of all Mom’s losses, the loss of her beloved George and her darling son
Jerry were the most profound. As was Mother’s habit, she relied on the enabling power of her Heavenly
Father, believing fully that He did all things well and that “He would make a way even when there
seemed to be no way.” Praise God, He was faithful!
Much of Mother’s energy was spent sustaining living things whether people, plants or animals with a
few exceptions. Flies and dandelions were not welcome in Mother’s domain, nor were birds if they
dared to attack her strawberries or raspberries, and she was very proactive in addressing these threats.
Mother planted hundreds and hundreds of trees and bushes throughout her years followed with the
diligent care required for their survival and success.
Mother grew up in a home where God’s Word and His principles were honored. In the early 60’s when
the Wymark Church was in its infancy, God drew Mom’s heart to Himself and He became The Lord of
her life, giving her joy and sincere purpose in living a life to bring glory to Him, along with the blessed
hope of spending eternity with Him. She loved and honored God’s Word and loved to sing songs of the
faith. She was often heard singing hymns while she worked and many were the times when she took a
few minutes out of her busy day to sit down at the piano and sing songs out of the hymnal.

WEINER – GUNTER

Weiner Gunter PicGunter Heinz Weiner (December 20, 1927 – July 31, 2016)With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Gunter Weiner – devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, and faithful friend.  Born in Hirschberg, Germany (now Jelenia Gora, Poland), in December of 1927, he was the precocious and much loved son of Richard (deceased) and Frieda (deceased) Weiner and elder brother to Margot (Friedel) Heuer (deceased) and Ruth (Gerhardt – deceased) Heuer. Having lost both his parents in WW2, a young man amidst the chaos that was Germany following the war, Gunter made his way to Neustadt, Germany where he met and eventually won the love of his life-long partner and beautiful best friend, Helma. Together, they decided to start a new life in a new world. Gunter made his way to Saskatoon, Canada in 1953, with Helma following him in 1954 to become his wife.  After pursuing many kinds of jobs to support his growing family, and assisted by good fortune and friends, Gunter found his way to the University of Saskatchewan, receiving his BA magna cum laude in 1963 and his teaching certificate in 1964.  In the fall of that year, he and his family moved to Swift Current, SK where he began his teaching career at O.M.Irwin Collegiate.  During his 24 years in front of the chalkboard, Gunter taught German and the Sciences.  He was also involved in many of the extracurricular activities.  One of his greatest accomplishments was co-ordinating a summer trip for his German students, guiding them through his homeland in 1974, 77, and 80.  Through his passion for teaching, he touched the lives of hundreds of students. Teaching was Gunter’s joy and he always said that he felt lucky to have been able to do what he loved as a career.  He remembered all his students and was deeply touched when they remembered him as well.  Because Gunter was part of teaching staffs at both Irwin and then at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School, Gunter and Helma found themselves a part of an extended family and a supportive community with other teachers and their families.  These more-than-friends have remained an important part of Gunter and Helma’s life to this day.  With a singular charm and wit, at times stubbornly curmudgeonly, Gunter was a passionate intellectual, constantly seeking answers and knowledge.  He was always up for a healthy and respectful debate on most any topic and was well prepared to engage in political discussions of any kind.  He was propelled by his inquisitive nature and strong sense of wanderlust to constantly seek new frontiers, literally and figuratively.   Husband, father, grandfather and friend – scholar and teacher; music FANatic (“what would this world be without music?”) and CBC supporter … Opera, Classical, Big Band, and Jazz/Satchmo devotee; historian linguist and wordsmith; debater and storyteller; KILLER card player (designated National Master Bridge Player) and charades master; animal lover and K9-walker; fishing enthusiast and connoisseur of fine spirits and seafood; soccer player and swimmer; volunteer and barbershop singer; photographer and archivist; terrible joke-maker and impish punster; dismal handyman and exquisite stained glass artist – Gunter had a passion for “this wonderful world.” He came through adversity, war and loss, crossing an ocean to build a new and rich life with his family in his much beloved adopted home on the Prairies, always a true German at heart and a loyal Canadian by choice.  Gunter is survived and mourned by his beloved wife, Helma, of 62 years; his sister Ruth Heuer (in Germany); his son Richard and his partner Cheryl Yates (Rachelle); his daughter Elizabeth (Dave) Cameron; his daughter Margot and her husband Don Ewles: his daughter Ruth and her husband Mark Thoreson; and his granddaughters Michelle (Jerid) Clarke, Kimberley (Emersen) Ziffle (Harper), and Amanda Thoreson. He will be missed by his relatives and childhood friends in Germany, and by the many life-long and dear friends who form our extended family here in Canada.  At Gunter’s request, there will be no funeral service.  A memorial get together for family and friends is planned for mid-September.  Until then, it would please him to know that, alone or in company, those who knew him would raise a glass and remember him with joy.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Gunter’s memory may be sent to the Swift Current SPCA (www.spcaswiftcurrent.com) and/or to the Southwest Youth Emergency Shelter Inc – Dorie’s House (box 103, Swift Current, SK  S9H 3X3).  Arrangements were in care of Parkside Memorial Funeral Home – Ryan Cappelle

Not Good-bye – Ivor Scott

Scatter my ashes to the winds my love

I would be as the gulls that climb the skies as the long night closes,

As cirrus clouds that trail through the moon,

Or as joyous waves that whip-snap foam

And I shall return to you across the snows, the plains of summer

I shall call from the garden, sing in the boulevard maples

and gently stirs the venetian blinds as I talk to you in the night

And your grief shall pass my love for even in deepest silence

I shall be merely a whisper away

gutwin-susie-picGUTWIN – Susie Ann – We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother, Susie Ann Gutwin.  Susie (also known as Susan), was born on January 19, 1941, on a farm east of Swift Current, to Peter and Agatha (Dyck) Langemann, and was the youngest of six children. When she was five years old, her family moved into Swift Current to a house on 9th St. East. Susie attended Elmwood Elementary School, and Swift Current Collegiate Institute. She went on to attend the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and earned her 2 year teaching certificate.  During this time she met a fellow named Glenn Gutwin, and the two were married on July 14, 1962. Susie taught at Oman School for a couple of years, but her career was interrupted by the birth of Glenn and Susie’s oldest child, Gail Susanne, in 1964. Two sons were added to the family: Russell Glenn, in 1966, and Thomas Bradley in 1967. Susie tended to her young family at home, cooking, gardening, helping with the children’s activities, and planning some memorable cross-country and cross-border summer camping holidays.  Susie found the time to take classes to upgrade her own education, too. In 1979 she received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Regina. Susie returned to teaching elementary school full-time and taught where assigned at Central School, Ashley Park School, and Oman School before she retired. She was proud to have taught many children to read; she really loved teaching and had a passion for early childhood education. The home on 4th Ave., which Glenn and Susie built when married, provided her comfort and stability through the changes life brought. During the mid-80’s, all the kids were away at university and starting careers and families. Glenn passed away unexpectedly in 1988. Susie continued steadfastly as before, teaching, caring for and visiting her aging Mom and mother-in-law, managing the family and her mother’s farming interests, and maintaining the home and farm yard for dozens of years.  After her retirement, Susie remained in her home and planted a garden every year that notably grew delicious tomatoes and a forest of hollyhocks right up until this year. Aging and health challenges grew, making travel out of town difficult. The family farm was sold, and consideration of a change of home entered family discussions. All the while, Susie enjoyed seeing family visit Swift Current and hearing of her 6 grandchildren’s lives and milestones. The home accumulated and helped preserve the memories she cherished.  At the beginning of July 2016, Susie fractured her hip while out in the yard. Although she initially showed determination and good progress toward recovery, this was unfortunately followed by other health complications and rapid deterioration. Susie passed away in the hospital peacefully on September 30, 2016.  Susie was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Agatha Langemann, her husband, Glenn Gutwin, and her brothers: Arthur, Edward, and Peter Langemann. She is mourned by her children: Gail (Gutwin) Wilson of Saskatoon, SK (husband Kevin and children Carolyn and Graham), Russ Gutwin of Edmonton, AB (wife Lana and children Ian and Renae), and Tom Gutwin of North Vancouver, BC (wife Mary Tourlas and children Christopher and Nicholas). She is also mourned by her sisters, Helen Langemann of Swift Current, SK and Mary Horst of Vernon, BC.  The family would appreciate any memorial donations to go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  A funeral service took place Wednesday October 5, 2016 at 2pm at Bridgeway Community Church in Swift Current.  The interment took place at Mount Pleasant Burial Park in Swift Current beside her late husband, Glenn.  For further information or to sign the family book of condolence, visit www.parksidefuneralhome.com.   Funeral arrangements are in the care of Parkside Memorial Funeral Home – Ryan Cappelle

He worked for Canada Post as Post Master in Kuroki until his retirement.  After his retirement, they enjoyed travelling and camping at the lake. They went on trips to Alaska, Ottawa, Quebec, Atlantic City and the Maritime provinces. The Simmons’ family reunions were events that he looked forward to and catching up with his siblings and their families. He loved to garden and work in his yard and if you were searching for him that’s where he could always be found. Their yard in Kuroki was always well-known for being in immaculate shape and he was known to use a level when trimming his hedges. They eventually moved out of Kuroki to Moose Jaw and a short time after that they moved to Swift Current to be closer to their family.  Glenn was first and foremost a family man. His greatest joy in life was the time he was able to spend with his family. He enjoyed quiet times with his family surrounding him. He will be sadly missed and he gave us countless years of memories and love.  Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of Glenn.
